Match report for Sat 03rd Oct 2009 @ 14:00, 1st XV
Farnham Royal’s season continued apace with another convincing win at home to Windsor.
Summary
Farnham Royal’s season continued apace with another convincing win at home to Windsor. With a few tweaks to the team that ran out last week against Grove, the team spirit and entertaining running rugby was still ever present. Farnham were graced with club captain Mark Beel’s first appearance of the season after taking an extended sabbatical from the start of the season to complete his male maxing course.
First half
Windsor got the game under way and a neat catch and drive from Farnham set up a platform to release the backs. From the resulting second phase Toni Flore, was on hand to make a strong break and from the resulting ruck Windsor were pinged, Mark Beel was accurate from the place kick to convert the early pressure 3-0 to Royals.
Windsor responded positively with a superb solo effort from their scrum half scoring between the posts with the resulting conversion taking the score to 3-7 to Windsor. With the momentum now on their side Windsor looked to capitalise on some sloppy positional play by the Royals leaving a huge blind side for the Windsor scrum half to attack and score, stepping nicely round the Royals fullback. 3-14 to Windsor.
A few stern words from the prodigal son, Mark ‘Dubai’s expensive this time of year’ Beel, perked up the Royals and leading by example, Beel makes an excellent break only to be stopped by age and a tight hamstring.
From the resulting set piece Morris Ngaru makes a great break and pop’s to John James who puts Dave Wallis in for his debut try in the corner. The conversion is missed by Mark Beel but the Royals are back in the game 8-14.
The Royals are unlucky not to extend their lead moments later after an excellent break from Toni Flore, who offloads in the tackle for Adam Barley to score, only to be brought back by the referee for an illegal tackle by Windsor.
The Royals get their reward for the entertaining and positive rugby after Jason Grumbs makes an excellent sniping break from the fringe of a ruck on the 22 to break through and score between the posts. Half time 15-14.
Second Half
At half time Killian Maptea is brought on to add some dancing feet to the Royals backrow, and this proves to be an inspired decision as he scores a try to take the Royals lead to 20-14. After a period of sustained pressure Morriss Ngaru makes up for missing the 6 on one overlap earlier in the half to score a typical bulldozing solo effort taking the score to 27- 14. The Royals man of the match Ben Inglis is rewarded for his solid defensive display with the opportunity to get on the score sheet after good hands put him over the line for a try. 32 – 14. Killion Maptea is on hand to score his second try of the half after replacement Dean Jones draws his man to put the supporting Killion in space to cross the line for the final Farnham points of the game. Farnham Royal 39 – 14. The final points of the game come from the Windsor man of the match, their scrum half after a typical solo effort, final score Farnham Royal 39-21 Windsor.
